EPE 401: Everything Epee: Clinic #4

Robert Handelman Robert · August 10, 2024

An In-depth View of How to Coach Epee from Youth to Elite Fencers

This series of seven clinics, with 21 total epee sessions, developed from Maître Handelman’s years of coaching epee and teaching three weapon coach clinics for the USFCA and internationally.

The goal is for the epee coach to learn how to deliver improved higher level epee lessons. Coaches who take all the sessions will learn a progression of material for a comprehensive epee background, and the practical ability to translate the techniques to any level lesson.

The clinics will progress from how to coach and cue correctly, to detailed information on all epee techniques, and finish with Teaching lessons and advanced high level Option lessons.  Each session has an additional Session Training Companion (STC) review, which summarizes all the drills and actions taught in the full session.

If possible, while watching the Session Training Companion videos it is suggested you work with a student, or another coach, to actively practice all the drills that are presented. After a drill is shown by the leads, the coaches should take time to repeat it as much as needed.

Clinic #4: Coach timing on complex actions

Trains coaches on timing as it relates to more complex actions such as compound two tempo attacks
and counter-attacks. The coach will also learn how to teach the defense to these actions. In-fighting tactics and methods are covered for the coach and student to practice. Second intention actions (more advanced tactics and set ups) are defined and the coach will practice them. For example: false attacks and combinations of actions and defense for them.

Each session earns continuing education credits and has a final formative assessment quiz. All quizzes contain 20 questions with a required passing grade of 75%. When the answer is incorrect, the correct answers will be displayed. Note the correct answers before retaking the exam. It is recommended to review parts of the session or parts of the session training companion before retaking the quiz and moving on.

The coach can proceed to the next session after passing the quiz with 75% or higher.

About Instructor

Robert

After fencing on the Binghamton University varsity sabre team, coached by Paul Pesthy, Rob was accepted in 1972 to the Fencing Master school at the Institut National des Sports (INS) in Paris France. He spent nearly three years earning his Fencing Master credential in all three weapons (sabre, foil, and épée). He is one of only three Americans to ever graduate from the INS. Over his coaching career, his students have been national finalists, national team members, and national champions in all three weapons. Maître Handelman was the head coach for the varsity team at UC Berkeley, taught coaches' clinics for the US Fencing Association at the Olympic training center at Squaw Valley, and training camps for our top junior fencers. He has coached US teams and his students at the Olympic Sports Festivals, World Cup Events, and Junior World Championships. As a coach developer he has organized and taught all three weapons at international clinics in Canada, China, Hungary, and national clinics throughout the U.S. for the USFCA. He developed with Connie Louie the successful SF Youth Fencing sabre program at Halberstadt Fencers’ Club in San Francisco. Rob also had a private practice as a Doctor of Chiropractic specializing in sports injuries from 1983 until he retired from chiropractic in 2010. He served on the USA Fencing Medical Commission for 4 years. He is a co-author of two fencing texts that are both used to train coaches in the US, Canada, England, and Australia, and fencers all over the world - Fencing Sabre: A Practical Training Guide for Coaches, Parents and Young Athletes (2010 & 2015 2nd ed.) and Fencing Foil: A Practical Training Guide for Coaches, Parents and Young Athletes (2015 2nd ed.). For six years Maître Handelman was the chair of the USFCA’s certification and accreditation board. Currently, he is serving as the President of the USFCA and has made the goal to create, develop, and implement a National Coaching Developmental Program (NCDP) for the USA.
